Real Weight — Interpreting Bachelard Through Poetry
Who was Gaston Bachelard — and why interpret him through poetry?
Gaston Louis Pierre Bachelard (1884–1962) was a French philosopher renowned for his work in poetics and the philosophy of science. Though not a poet himself, he shaped modern thought on imagination, creativity, and the symbolic language of the natural elements.
Frank Prem first encountered Bachelard via a passing comment suggesting the philosopher’s ideas were “made for poetry.” That spark led Prem to immerse himself in thirteen translated volumes of Bachelard’s writing on imagination and elemental metaphor. The result? A spontaneous and resonant poetic dialogue — captured in Bachelard Interpreted, an eight-part series of free-verse collections that echo, respond to, and reimagine Bachelard’s poetic vision.
Real Weight is the third volume in this series, written by Australian poet and storyteller Frank Prem (Small Town Kid, Devil In The Wind, The New Asylum – a memoir of psychiatry).

Dive into an interpretation of the poetics of Gaston Bachelard
Real Weight is a poetic response to Bachelard’s meditations on the element of Earth — drawn from his works Earth and Reveries of Will and Earth and Reveries of Repose. Prem lets the poetic impulse rise organically, crafting free-verse responses that interpret and inhabit Bachelard’s vision through a personal and imaginative lens.
