Description
The Western Front: War on the Somme
From the dusty Diamantina to the outback of South Australia, the desert country of the West. From tiny townships and the bustling cities of young Australia, they volunteered to help fight the War on the Somme.
Mother England had need. The world was vast, and exciting and mostly somewhere over the horizon.
Australia went to fight in The Great War of 1914 – 1918, and her young men found the blood and the mud of the Somme.
Duty and Excitement and Grief
For Australian men, both young and old, this was a duty – to serve Mother England. An excitement – and the chance to see the world.
It was the deepest grief, to lose sons and lovers and husbands in the war on the Somme. The brightest and the best fallen to their deaths on foreign fields of war.
Destruction and Ruin of the War on the Somme
Lives lost, livings destroyed. Cities and villages decimated by the war on the Somme and the Western Front, through France and Belgium.
So many places of worship that had stood proud, destroyed. Trains and transports and men. Always men and more men eaten by the destruction of a cruel and wanton war.
A Picture Tells a Thousand Tales
Frank Prem has found the stories hidden within the images of World War I. One hundred and eighty images, each with its own story, now able to be shared with readers. Communicated – image to soul.
This is a unique telling of the stories of war.
