What is Speculative Poetry ?
Wikipedia defines Speculative poetry in this way:
Speculative poetry is a genre of poetry that focuses on fantastic, science fictional and mythological themes. It is also known as science fiction poetry or fantastic poetry. It is distinguished from other poetic genres by being categorized by its subject matter, rather than by the poetry’s form.
In the case of The Garden Black, Frank Prem wanders freely through the ‘what if’ universe and accomplishes a satisfying poetic exploration.
The Garden Black – Speculative Free Verse Poetry
The Garden Black is Frank Prem’s first foray into speculative poetry and fantasy themes, rooted in the twin realms of rainforest and imagination. These realms — as explored in this collection — are vast and uncharted. What emerges is a poetic journey through myth, fantasy, and dark allegory. Examples of this poetic vision include:
- The rainforest becomes a desert, and then the sea.
- A lonely man in a satellite orbits Earth, playing his violin. A wistful girl in a garden gazes skyward and dances beneath the light.
- Od Ovo – a youth who is from here, raises the dust of frustrated boredom on a mining asteroid, and cannot believe traveller tales of places where water falls from the sky.
- What colour are the flowers in the Reaper’s garden? They are all colours . . . They are black.
Welcome to the speculative poetry fantasies that are The Garden Black.
Look Inside
here
in the dunes
I fear
I may be drowning
in shimmers
of sun . . .
of light
my heart beats
the sand
and I will write you
a letter
penned
through dust
that fills my hands
to say
your name
is the one
I am calling
