Publication Details
Waking The Shadow is about to be published worldwide in paperback format on the 3rd of August, 2026 (Part I) and the 10th August, 2026 (Part II). The two Parts comprise Volume 1 of my new Campbell Interpreted series. I’ve taken the opportunity today to release the EPUB edition of each of Part I and Part II in my Shop before uploading to Amazon and Draft2Digital for wider distribution.
I had a bit of a setback in preparing these books for publication. My usual process is a simple and straightforward one where I draft and edit the work as I proceed through a project, attending to format and layout tasks as they arise. Somewhere along the way, a title will suggest itself for the work. In the case of the Campbell Interpreted series my initial title was going to be ‘Writing The Shadow’ and I happily proceeded through to final draft stage before I became aware that Joanna Penn – a best‑selling author (The Creative Penn) had, not long ago, released a book with exactly the same title.
That came as a bit of a shock. There is no requirement to have a unique title, but neither is it wise to be duplicating someone else’s — especially when they are a best‑selling author. The discovery set me back a little. I finally decided that ‘Waking The Shadow’ worked well and probably better for this particular volume. A lot of work and a complete review and re‑design of the book later, it is publication time.
The EPUB Experience with Waking The Shadow
It is worth noting a couple of particular features of the EPUB editions of books in this series (starting with Part II). Some work has demanded an approach that is not quite straightforward. For example, one poem pair features mirrored text, with one half of the poem presented upside down on the page. In other instances, columns have been used to provide a parallel reading experience for the particular poem.
These approaches can be a little tricky to produce in paperback layouts, but are effectively impossible in an EPUB. EPUBs won’t show upside‑down text or columns. The problem is compounded by my wish to ensure that the EPUB files meet accessibility requirements. For example, digital readers can speak the text aloud for a vision‑impaired reader — but they can’t read upside down.
My solution has been to have the text placed in the usual manner, so that the text can be read — audibly by the device or visually by the reader — but to also include an image of the text as laid out in the paperback. My hope is that the intention of the original layout is preserved or communicated in the digital format. The images below show what I mean.
